The Pierron Collection of British Commonwealth Missing Colours


London, Thursday 8th December 2009


 

This will be a landmark auction, there having never been a catalogue solely devoted to this subject. Missing colours are undoubtedly the most spectacular and visual of all errors.

The Pierron collection contains items from over 55 different countries and territories, from 1959 to 2008. They range from the most startling and obvious omission to the most challenging to spot. Many are in plate blocks of various sizes and strips.



Among the more extensive countries are Australia which includes the 1966 13c. Avocet with grey missing and 15c. Galah with red missing, 1971 2c. Sturt’s Desert Rose with yellow missing, 1972 10c. Pioneer Life with black missing, 1973 7c. Sydney Opera House with dark blue missing, 1977 20c. Performing Arts with olive-grey missing and 1979 20c. Steam Railways with black missing.



Canada is another country with a multitude of missing colours. Some of the more notable are the 1978 50c. Prairie Street Scene block, one with magenta and brown missing, 1982 QE II with black missing, 1997 90c. Chinese New Year, Ox miniature sheet with gold and fluorescent tagging missing, and 2003 $5 Moose pane of four with spectacular brown and green missing.


  


Hong Kong has a fine range of the 1962-73 high values and the Malayan States includes the ever popular 1965 Flower series. Malta features the 1965-70 Definitive issues with its multitude of various missing colours.



New Zealand is another country with an extensive run of these errors, particularly in the 1960-66 Pictorial and 1970-76 issues. It also has some of the most startling and this includes the 1962 3d. Telegraph Centenary with bluish green missing, 1962 3d.+1d. Health with orange missing and 10c. QE II plate block of ten with blue missing.



Northern Rhodesia features many of the 1963 Arms issue including 3d. plate block of twelve with orange (eagle) missing and Singapore includes various values from the popular 1962-66 issue.

For all those interest in the stamps of Queen Elizabeth II, this should be a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire some of these rare and elusive modern classics.
