Rare Number One Notes Sell in Hong Kong Auction.

Spink offered a unique opportunity to obtain serial numbers never before released on the open market today in Hong Kong. Thirteen notes from The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation were auctioned and fetched a total price of over HK$1million. All thirteen lots were low numbered banknotes but what made this collection exceptional were the seven number 1 serial number notes. All number 1 notes are practically impossible to acquire. In the United Kingdom Her Majesty the Queen is presented with all Bank of England number 1 banknotes.

The highlight of the collection was the $1000 note, dated 31 March 1977, with serial number A 000001. It sold to a private collector for HK$425,600 (37,232.18 GBP).

“We were very pleased to be able to offer such wonderful and rare pieces to collectors today in Hong Kong. There was a fantastic buzz in the room when the notes came up for sale and we are very happy with the result. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for banknote collectors and the active bidding was an accurate reflection of this,” said Barnaby Faull, Director of Banknotes at Spink and auctioneer for the sale.
