Great Britain Prices soar to new heights at Spink £1.3 million sold in stamps and postal history
Philatelic enthusiasts gathered mid-afternoon yesterday to purchase a portion of history from the Great Britain ‘Victoriana’ stamps and postal history collection. Four hundred and thirty-six lots went under the hammer realising a total price of £1,352,764. The highlight of the sale was lot 2042: the largest known 1840 1d. multiple used on a cover. Dated 7th August 1840, the envelope was mailed from Manchester to Chancery Lane in London. It was conservatively estimated to fetch between £20,000 and £25,000. The bidding escalated greatly beyond the estimated price and this remarkable piece sold in the end for £143,850 to an anonymous bidder.

Lot 2042 The largest known 1840 1d. multiple on a cover, being an 1840 One Penny Black block of fourteen from plate 1b. Sold for £143,850
Lot 2062 A Stunning plate VII mint marginal block of four on experimental paper. Sold for £115,100
Lot 2024 1840 Mulready cover, addressed to Tobago in the West Indies. Examples of Mulreadys addressed overseas are extremely rare and this is thought to be the only known 2d. usage to the West Indies. Sold for £80,600
Lot 2323 1867-1883, £1 brown-lilac surface printed issue, unused with large print original gum. Sold for £74,850
