Europe And Overseas - 6th December 2007



This interesting and varied sale includes an unusual array of lots from romantic areas such as Brazil, Chile, Egypt, Iran, Israel, Lombardy and Venetia, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and Württemburg.

The Brazil contains a very unusual - with only a few recorded examples known - entire letter in 1866 from an  officer of the Brazilian Army Camp in Corrientes Province to his sister explaining how hard and exciting his life is the army is and how lucky that he had not been injured in the various skirmishes fought.

An interesting collection of Chile, in a stockbook, with hundreds of stamps, including multiples, printings, a wide variety of shades and a selection of covers.

The Egypt section includes a 1838 Waghorn letter and two very rare Zeppelin items of mail flown on the LZ 127, both cancelled by rare Suez/Graf Zeppelin datestamps.

A section of Ethiopia with a superb collection containing an extraordinary Amharic letter and many unusual surcharge issues mint.

A good range of lots from Germany including an unbelievable holding of classic used Württemberg with quantities of each issue including seven examples of the 1873 70 kreuzer value.

The Israel includes an unusual group of unique1948 Military essays proof sheets for the proposed issue in peacock blue, sky blue and violet-lake from the collection formed by Frank E. Read

Iran contains a number of interesting and varied singles lots and ranges with some seldom offered mint issues.

One of the more unusual lots in the sale under Netherlands is a complete sheet of sixty-five labels in green for 1916 Internee Camp Mail which was only in use for a month.

A seldom offered group of lots from Saudi Arabia with many from Nejd including mint blocks of the overprinted issues. The highlight of this section is 1927 (Jan.) registered envelope from Djeddah to Cairo with an astonishing franking of July-August 1925 Nejd surcharges.

Another Middle Eastern country well-represented is Transjordan with good range of the 1923 overprinted issues.

The United States section contains a good selection of the 1861 1 and 3 cent issues with many on fancy printed envelopes.

The sale concludes with the usual concoction of Collections and Ranges.
