Great Britain
Illustrated Envelopes
1899-1914, a marvellous collection of illustrated envelopes (c.380) pasted - some only lightly - into two volumes, executed by George Pointin (1872-1949), a Royal Acadamey artist, sent from Arundel or Southampton and addressed to Walter Pontin. The envelopes range in style and medium from studied watercolours to pen and ink cartoons or caricatures and reflect different stages in George and Walter's life. Between 1899 and 1900, Walter was engaged in Southern Africa and the envelopes are addressed to Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Natal or Williamstown, often forwarded on to De Aar with some more interesting philatelic points including "too late for ship" and other endorsements - the illustrations in this period often depict military or patriotic scenes.
Later, the envelopes are addressed either to Toronto, Canada, Australia, Scotland, New York, Hoboken, Jersey City.
Better executed envelopes depict ships, trains or buildings, with particularly appealing Christmas envelopes.
Also a small sketch book filled out by George containing pen and ink sketches as well as more complete watercolours, mostly of British landscapes or buildings.
A wonderful collection, most unusual to have remained as an intact correspondence, executed by a talented and respected artist.
